Utilizing dial-up Internet access , Meganet was Sega's first online multiplayer gaming service, and functioned on a pay to play basis. The system functioned through the use of a peripheral called the Mega Modem and offered several unique titles that could be downloaded, and a few could be played competitively with friends. In addition, it shared technology and equipment with more serious services such as the Mega Anser, used for banking purposes.

Though the system was announced for North America under the rebranded name "Tele-Genesis", it was never released for that region. The Meganet service utilized its own library of titles, independent of the Mega Drive library. Most of these games never received a cartridge release; however, Columns , Flicky , Fatal Labyrinth , and Teddy Boy Blues each later saw cartridge versions.

Most games for the service were small, at around kB per game, due to the limits of Internet connection speeds at the time. Due to issues with long-distance charges through the use of telephone lines, as well as seconds of lag time between commands, only two games featured competitive play: Tel-Tel Stadium and Tel-Tel Mahjong , with the remainder of the games available for single players via download.

Due to Sega's reluctance to commit to releasing the service in North America, third-party developers in that region were unwilling to invest in developing games specifically for Meganet. This resulted in a low number of titles created for the service.

The following list contains all of the titles released for the Meganet service. All titles in this list were released in Japan only. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikipedia list article. Video games portal. Sega Enterprises, Ltd.

BR [40]. April 28, December 20, [41]. August 17, November 7, November 14, October 18, This action RPG has to be one of the most handsome games of its type available on the Genesis.

The player takes control of an ape whose slow movement is offset by his uncanny ability to spit deadly fireballs at enemies. A cracking little game, this. There are gigantic amalgams of screaming heads, pistons, and arteries. A half-giant, half-train monster. Demonic skulls with wings and nautilus-like monsters. Oh, and the player character is a muscle-bound hero with Icarus-like wings.

The aim is to scream down a highway in a sports car and apprehend fleeing criminals by repeatedly ramming them until their own vehicle finally grinds to a halt — a Jason Statham approach to law enforcement if you will. Unlike the original, this version offers three different cars to drive rather than the standard-issue black Porsche, and there are additional little touches like ramps that flip your vehicle up on two wheels.

Copies of the Genesis version are now difficult to come by and, as a result, unusually expensive. Although billed as a top-down shooter, the aim of the game goes beyond just firing at things: to complete each level, you have to leave explosive devices in predefined positions on the map, and then get to the exit before the digital timer ticks down to zero. Further Reading: 20 Best Dystopian Games. The central character — a diminutive robot with heavy feet and big eyes — is an adorable creation, and the whole game is handsomely designed from beginning to end.

Some distractingly repetitive music can grate after a while, but the variety of the levels and sheer challenge makes this shortcoming easy to overlook. Its sprites flicker horribly, and the dreary lack of color in some levels make it look more akin to a Master System title than a release for the then new bit Genesis. Notable at the time for its large and dubious sprites depicting naked fairies, it was also a supremely playable platformer from British game design ace Raffaele Cecco.

The Genesis version appeared in , by which point the fairies in the US version had been given a few bits of skimpy clothing to protect their modesty — most likely at the behest of Sega of America. You can probably guess which option is the most entertaining — not to mention controversial at the time. Are those guard dogs, foxes, or giant rats? Further Reading: 50 Underrated Multiplayer Games. The enemies, on the other hand, look terrific — the bosses are a truly exotic bunch and include a giant flying sea serpent and a demonic hedgehog.

The games industry needs more demonic hedgehogs. As one of a small band of Indiana Jones-like heroes, you batter and shoot your way through a landscape of ivory poachers and other cruel villains, and every so often, a few animals will join in to deliver their own spot of retribution.

Yes, we did look that collective noun up. He must be a nightmare in all-you-can-eat restaurants. Strange, but lots of fun. The level designs are varied, too, with the second stage taking place on the back of a gigantic flying fortress. This unusual game from Technosoft was one of the earliest attempts to create a real-time strategy game for a console. Its elfin hero bounds through a vibrant series of fantasy landscapes, collecting things like milkshakes and power-ups while occasionally jumping on the heads of his enemies.

Its handful of fresh ideas really stand out, too. This side-scrolling run-and-gun game was ported to numerous computers and consoles, including a great version for the ZX Spectrum. The agile hero can shoot in all directions and even crawl while doing so. As well as dealing with the bad guys waiting for you on your journey across each level, there are more enemies lurking in the windows and doors further in the distance. You can also spit blobs of your own goo at enemies, but again at the expense of your overall mass.

A perfectly respectable version for the Master System came out in North America and Europe in , yet the Genesis edition failed to follow suit. Your main weapon is a rainbow, which you can throw out in front of your character to either kill enemies or use as a kind of escalator to help you reach high platforms. A steadily-rising water level adds a layer of tension, as one slip from a platform or fading rainbow can leave you falling to your doom.

Driving down a post-apocalyptic road to nowhere, you have to shoot oncoming vehicles and collect the fuel orbs within, all while staying on the tarmac long enough to reach the finish line before your petrol runs out. Or it could just be the feeling of exhilaration you get from reaching the finish line with one tiny drop of fuel left — or the delicious agony of stopping mere inches away from victory.

Its creators use its Tenryaku-era setting as a springboard for some truly inspiring creations, such as ancient Japanese temples that transform into tanks, or huge flying cannons topped with eerie Noh theatre masks. Japanese developer Treasure excelled itself with this adorable and typically strange platform game.

You control a slightly ungainly-looking puppet hero, who storms a colorful series of levels in a quest to save his town from an evil demon king. The usual action-adventure trappings apply: you traverse the environment looking for four elemental spirits, and see off a series of area bosses in the process.

Sega launched the Sega Genesis Mini on September 19, a retro console with 42 classic games pre-installed.

Sega revealed the replica of its popular 90s video game console during a fan conference in Tokyo back in April — the company waited more than a year to release the Genesis mini. Like Nintendo's popular retro consoles, the Sega Genesis Mini will have HD video output and comes with a pair of wired replica controllers. Unlike Nintendo, Sega has already made dozens of classic Genesis games available on modern video game consoles, giving players more options if they want to play those retro titles without buying the Genesis Mini.

I just went by GameFaqs if I recall. I hate reading stuff that says "SNES had a much more expansive library in the end" when, no, no it didn't. As far as I know this list is as exact as it gets, it's taken years of research and every game on the list has only made it there after proof it exists in NTSC format.

Do with it what you will :. I also have lists of NTSC box sets and re-releases if you're interested in them but they're probably a bit less complete. Barkley Shut Up And Jam! Gold Pirates! So then after taking out "not for resales" and "red cart" version of a game, and "Lost Vikings Ballistic release". So then after taking out "not for resales" and "red cart" version of a game, and "Lost Vikings Ballistic release" sounds good to me, but there could be more.

Like I said, all those games definitely exist in NTSC format, there could well be a fair few more that I am yet to see. If anything has anything to add to that list then please do as I'm always interested in new finds, photographic proof required ;. If anyone's interested in the Euro list, just say and I'll chuck it in here, that one is perfect! The F1 games are a new one to me though. Simpsons: Itchy And Scratchy - unreleased. I've also included those unlicensed games that maded it to retail stores, as they, too, would have been readily available to any child of the 90s living in America.

With the exception of Legend of Wukong and Beggar Prince, any unlicensed game that may have made it to America post after the system's death would not be included the first two I've included because the American Genesis releases catered strictly to Americans and were originally MD games anyways. As for Pier Solar, it shall be the first to be added to the list once it's released and I can't wait :D. The total is an "official" titles. And by "official" I mean titles that were very much available at any retail store in America during the system's lifespan.

If you could add more, it would be awesome; as it entails more games relased for my beloved system. Aaahh Real Monsters 5. Action 52 6. Addams Family, The 7. Adventures of Mighty Max, The 9.
