Being surrounded by dozens of anything is a real threat. Ants force you to constantly move or die from melee or shotgun blasts. Spiders are a pain in the ass as your movements can kill you if you run into their threads. Drones except reds aren't much of threat but are constant chip damage. Mechs as well. NEVER stop killing them all till it is done! Serious Sam is more or less the same. Tons of things to shoot, who can shoot you right back. Kill them first! But that SS4 leak, it doesn't feel like that. There is a small visible sphere around Sam. Anyone inside that sphere is aggressive towards Sam, anyone outside of it doesn't know he exists. They aren't shooting at Sam at all. That's how most games deal with large enemy counts.

Only those close enough to the player has an AI while everyone else is just standing there as a background asset. You can see this happen yourself in that legion clip. As Sam moves to the left soldiers have their AIs turned on once they get close enough and then turn to look at him. SS4 as a whole isn't giving good vibes. Very few talks, zero reviews, the embargo is still in effect, not even the Steam forums is all that active. All red flags and warnings in my opinion.

To be clear in that clip they are shooting at the equally big human army that is behind Sam. Those machinegun rounds you see flying all over the place is from human soldiers. And neither of the two armies are background assets per se, as you would see in other games, they can hurt and kill each other independent of Sam. I'm reserving judgement until then. Pretty sure reviews will also be up before the game releases too. What the hell is this? Why hasn't that been released officially? All footage I have seen so far looks really boring and hardly any kind of improvement over SS3. In their defense SS4 seem to, at it's core, be very faithful to the series; so presumably those already on board with SS will be buying it anyway. Which is surprising given Devolver is usually so good at that. They made a pretty big deal about having the writers of The Talos Principle come back for SS4 to give it some "actually good writing" but what I'm seeing here is The game play looks like the same fun zaniness we know and love.

But those story scenes? As a non serious sam fan I agree too. If frame rater didn't do a whole series of videos explaining SS, I would have thought SS4 was like a first person dynasty warriors game. Probably because the legion system doesn't work.

We've went from fighting hundreds of thousands of enemies to "there will be thousands in the background but you'll normally fight a few hundred". As a SS fan, wow this looks bad. I mean what is wrong with them? The model of Sam, his glasses, animations It looks like fanfic mod to GMod or something. Serious sam always looked like garbage in cutscenes to some extent to be fair. Serious sam 3 looked decent, but some of the animations for cutscenes reaaallly werent.

And that was the best sam looked. My favorite part is when Sam punches that military dude. That animation looked slow and funny. To be fair it looked really stiff and bland in SS3 as well, but what really put a damper on cutscenes in that game was that they were just so straightforward and boring - at least here in SS4 it seems like they're having some fun, cinematic quality be dammed.

Definitely reminds me of TSE but with more voiced characters. I can genuinely picture it as a great fit to give the campaign some pace. They're a pretty small developer with a pretty small budget and are rolling their own technology perhaps part of the problem. I definitely think if they dropped all those assets into Unreal Engine it'd look 10x better.

There's lots of detailed models but the lighting is just so flat. They use their own engine for a reason though. Scenes like this basically wouldn't run properly if done in Unreal. At least not while keeping actors dynamic and interactable.

The Serious engine is actually kind of impressive from a technical perspective, the simple fact is that it is just not built to focus on cinematic animation and lightning in the same way Unreal is. Different tools for different products, and so on. Yeah there's definitely advantages to having their own engine so they can do things like that. But I do think there's a middle ground where it can still look like nice. If they are unable to make main character look passable than just dont show him at all or I dunno, hire someone to do one good animation, one good model and show him in just one ending scene.

At this point this trailer looks worse than Postal 3 which is a parody of a game project. I think a lot of people in here are forgetting that Serious Sam is all about cheesy, over-acted story-telling. Like Duke Nukem. Sam spits out the cheesiest, eye rolling one-liners and doesn't do much in the way of intelligent conversation. Sure you can dislike that that's how it is, but at least understand that that is what they're going for.

But if that's what you're going for why would you then clearly put a ton of effort into organizing a cast of fully voiced NPCs, in depth plot and cutscenes. No one is playing serious sam in for any of those things. Its kinda the Aphex twin of gaming in the sense there is clear pisstakes being taken at the 'gaming' industry. I wouldn't be surprised if the joke is making of of triple A state-of-the-art graphics game by intentionally looking like shit and cheesy in all the wrong ways.

Once back on base, Quinn informs Sam that they have been unable to reach Carter and Mikhail, so Sam and Rodriguez go back into Rome to rescue them. They introduce him to Charlie, an Arachnoid informant who knows how to get into the castle where the church is located. With help from Charlie and resistance fighters, Sam makes it to the church and makes contact with his friends. Lord Achriman shows up again, but Sam kills him to avenge Kenny. Before Sam and his team enter the church, Father Mikhail doubts the Grail they seek is what it actually seems, and that it was kept hidden away for a reason.

When Mikhail uncovers the Ark, he finds that it actually contains a golden scepter with the figure of a snake wrapped around it, which bears a great resemblance to Aaron's Rod. General Brand and his soldiers appear, who reveals himself as a traitor with the intention of offering the Grail to Mental as a gift. Brand takes the artifact and allows himself to be bitten by the snake figure, transforming him into a monster. Mikhail intervenes to stop the now monstrous Brand, but he kills him and captures Sam along with the rest of his team.

After a tranquilizer trip, Sam wakes up to find himself inside Brand's transport plane. Just as he is about to leave, Brand mocks him, tellin him that the humans have already lost the war. Sam escapes by parachute and lands at an abandoned oil platform in the Arctic. There, he obtains a boat and departs to Tunguska to stop Brand. On reaching land, Sam is assisted by a version of himself from the future who provides him with a snowmobile before leaving.

At the site of the portal in Tunguska, Sam finds that his friends have also escaped from Brand and joins them a large scale battle between the EDF and the alien forces, where Mental sends his toughest forces at them. Brand recaptures Sam and offers both him and the artifact as a gift to Ugh-Zan VI, one of Mental's most powerful servants, but the creature rejects him.

After the battle, Sam and his remaining friends celebrate while remembering their lost companions. In a post-credits scene, the future Sam visits Nonna to tell her that he has a mission for her. In addition to new weapons, some of the weapons from previous games will also have optional upgrades that can be acquired through side quests. The maps are much larger than in previous Serious Sam games; there are large-scale environments that feature optional side quests, but gameplay is still like in the other games, and not so much as an open-world game. Gameplay remains much the same as all of the games in the series, which involves making it to the end of the level and eliminating massive hordes of enemies. There are no puzzles in the game, except for finding keys that unlock doors. Like in Serious Sam 2 , friendly NPCs will now fight alongside the player and assist them as the progress through the levels.
